It's easy to write off There's a Riot Goin' On as one of two things -- Sly Stone's disgusted social commentary or the beginning of his slow descent into addiction. It's both of these things, of course, but pigeonholing it as either winds up dismissing the album as a .
With There's a Riot Goin' On and other Sly albums, though, the end result leaves me a little underwhelmed. I think the main reason is that I always feel like my copy of the album is mixed without lead vocals or melodies for many of the songs. Sly's lyrics are often indecipherable and mixed as if they are background vocals.
A essential funk album with a nice side of psychedelic soul which gives the album a nice warm and hypnotic feel to it and tackles some important issues which are still relevant.
