'From the very edge of Americana'. Dark, doom-laden country. Johnny Cash meets Nick Cave reinvented by Quentin Tarantino. Operating at the Captain Beefheart and Swamp ends of fourschosevergedickmarpblogaticanin.coy, Texas-born maverick Johnny Dowd and his incendiary band are part of the Gothic Americana triumvirate that also includes The Handsome Family and Jim White.
This, for me, is the last great Dowd album, although every one of his releases is a fascinating trip into the outer reaches of the human psyche. Cemetery Shoes runs a close second to Pictures from Life's Other Side as the starting place to examine Dowd's work, and includes the excellent Wedding Dress, Dylan's Coat and Rip Off/5(5).
AllMusic Review by John D. Luerssen Despite Johnny Dowd 's fixation with death, the year old guitarist has inexplicable appeal on his fifth album, Cemetary Shoes. Beneath all of the bloodstained clothes is a man with superb axe prowess and a Nick Cave -meets- Tom Waits -meets- Tom Verlaine -vocal approach.7/
The album Cemetery Shoes was released in Cruel Words, released in , went on to win the Alt Country award in the 7th Annual Independent Music Awards the following year. In , Dowd, drummer Brian Wilson (aka Willie B) and Jim White formed the band Hellwood.
